Larne Under 17s win Ophir Sevens.
Larne Rugby Club’s Under-17s played brilliantly to win the recent Ophir Sevens tournament at the Mallusk club’s new pitches.
Having got off to a slow start, they lost by three tries to one against a fine Ophir side. However, they improved as this competition went on and used their pace and exploited space to comprehensively defeat Ballyclare 26-0 and Instonians 26-5.
They went on to beat a very strong Banbridge outfit 19-12, taking them through to the last four.
In the semi-final they again took on Inst and won at a canter, 26-0.
Larne met Ophir in the final and were keen to claim victory following their first match defeat.
They made their intentions clear from the start when Al Burke ran clear for the opening score. Larne followed this up with three more tries, while Ophir could only muster a consolation try.
Skipper Luke Burford was awarded the trophy to the delight of his team-mates. Burke was named Man of the Match after the final and also picked up the ‘Stand-out Player’ of the tournament thanks to his all-round performances and his try-scoring exploits which reached double figures.
Stu Andrews was also superb with Glenn Wilson showing great pace and guile for his three tries. He was ably supported by team-mates Aaron Johnston, Josh Reynolds, Jamie Hamilton, Adam Maguire, Morgan Wharry, Josh Wylie and captain, Burford.
The team is hopeful of competing in the league for the first time this season in the 15-a-sides and welcomes any new players.
