Larne RFC welcomed back their Scottish friends from Wigtownshire RFC in the annual pre-season match on Saturday afternoon at the Glynn.

In what has been a lengthy relationship between the two clubs, the match always proves to be both a feisty and friendly affair. A pre-match function, kindly sponsored by Stephen Weatherup, allowed the ‘old boys’ to have a catch up and get ready to enjoy the rugby from the side-lines.

Larne kicked off playing into a stiff breeze in the first half but did not let this phase them. Early pressure up front seen the ball turned over and Larne to launch their first counter-attack with pace and precision. Jordan Burns finished off well in the corner to set the home team into their stride.

‘Shire tried to use the breeze to their advantage and pin Larne into their own half but good returns with both foot and hand of the back three in Agnew, Saunderson and Bell saw any threat neutralised. With confidence growing in the Larne men they showed patience in setting up phase after phase to gain quick ball and a delicate kick through from Andews saw Burns slide over at the corner again for his second.

Not to be out done the pack also had to get in on the action, solid carried from Hunter and Crampsey set the standards to the rest of the pack which give the younger members of the squad something to aspire to. S Johnston put in a sterling first half performance in the loose really proving the point that training pays off! Cole felt the rewards of his hard work along with the rest of the pack when he put himself on the scoresheet to push Larne further ahead.

A lapse in concentration from the kickoff, and a few soft shoulders, allowed ‘Shire to capitalise in some rare field position. Their large rolling pack took advantage on the Larne line and crashed over for a timely score not long before half time. The homeside led at half time by 26-5 margin with Saunderson also getting on the scoresheet before the whistle.

The second half seen the breeze favour the Larne men and kicking from Andrews and Garrett kept the visitors pinned deep in their own half. Having to run the ball out proved difficult and as the Scots tired penalties started to creep in to their game. Larne proved again how fitness was key to success and took their chances well. As the game opened up Larne started to run in the scores, Cole bagged his second and Garrett landed a second half hatrick.

The final score ended up 73-12 to the home team.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank Wigtownshire RFC for making the journey over and look forward to the return trip next year in Scotland.

Next up for Larne RFC is the annual Randalstown Tournament where the Glynn men will look to retain the title from last year.
